SASSMOUTH

Sassmouth es el aka de Sam Kern, deejay y productora estadounidense que actualmente reside en Londres… reside en Londres en esos pequeños espacios de tiempo en los que no está de gira por los EE.UU., pinchando en París, Chile o incluso por nuestra zona. Actualmente está en pleno “Spring Tour” pasando por ciudades como San Franciso o Chicago y en breve Detroit. El pasado mes de abril actuó junto a Mathew Dear en el mítico Smart Bar de Chicago y en breve estará en las aperturas junto a su amiga y compañera Punisher, del DEMF 2011 (Detroit Electronic Music Festival) compartiendo junto a Akufen, Luke Hess, Arthur Oskan y justin Long entre otros.

Desde Multiplex hemos pensado en hacerle una pequeña entrevista para que nos cuente un poco más de cerca como anda con tanto ajetreo.

Hola Sam, un placer que compartas con nosotros tu tiempo y felicidades por tu reciente “tesoro”.

Gracias Diego!  

- Para los que no te conocemos tanto, nos puedes contar cuales han sido tus raíces, influencias e inicios en esto de la música?

Bueno, mis raíces y primeras influencias son de Punk y New Wave. Cuando era niña, vivía en el estado de Washington, cerca de la escena de Seattle en los años 80 y 90. Grupos como Nirvana, Jane’s Addiction, Fugazi, Sleater-Kinney, y Los Pixies eran mis favoritos. Por eso, cosas mas experimental, e industrial, como Aphex Twin, Nine Inch Nails y Front 242 me interesaban mucho durante este tiempo. Mi hermana mayor tenia una colección de música súper influencial, música de Hip Hop como Digital Underground y JJ Fad y Pop de Inglaterra como Depeche Mode y The Cure.  En el mismo tiempo, tocaba la viola en un orquesta y un grupo de Punk Rock. Supongo que amaba todos! Y ahora, siempre estoy buscando para una variedad de música electrónica, cosas lindas y cosas oscuras, cosas duras y cosas mas Funk. Pero siempre con bajo.     

 - Eres una persona que viajas mucho y has vivido en New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Santiago de Chile, Detroit y actualmente en Londres. Cuéntanos un poco sobre tu aprendizaje, evolución musical, cosas que han sido importantes en tu desarrollo profesional, etc.

Cuando mudé a Nueva York, y después a Chicago, encontré el mundo del House y Techno en lugares como Twilo, Tunnel en Nueva York, y Smart Bar en Chicago. Después del primer minuto dentro, ya era una adicta a la música, la onda muy "underground" dentro de estos lugares, la gente bailando lado por lado, pero no en de una manera sexista.  Necesité descubrir todo sobre la música, los artistas, los sellos, la historia. Pasaba mucho tiempo preguntando a los amigos locales sobre la música y a veces a los deejays, como "cual es este tema?" y mucho tiempo en las tiendas de vinilos, escuchando, escuchando. También viajábamos a Detroit tantas veces, para las fiestas y para aprender su historia. La primera vez en Detroit fue bastante heavy, inmediatamente sentí el gran corazón de la ciudad, porque siempre esta reflejado en su música. El trabajo se fue, la gente se fue, pero la música y el arte y la alma de la ciudad quedan.  Es un lugar muy impresionante, pienso que cada amante de la música debe hacer una viaje a Detroit en su vida.   

 - Háblanos sobre Naughty Bad Fun Collective.

Simplemente, NBFC primero era un grupo de amigos en Chicago que les gustaba la cultura de "after party". Organizaban "after-parties" en cualquier lugar que podían encontrar, una discoteca, un bar, una casa, un parque, un bosque. Probablemente el lugar más famoso era nuestro sótano se llama el "Rave Dungeon". Adam Beyer, Paco Osuna, y Seth Troxler, y muchos amigos del "Midwest" de EE.UU tocaban allá en fiestas varias. El sótano tenía una onda mágica, estaba cubierto de antiguos graffiti, tubos de ventilación que las personas aporreaban cuando la música era buenísima... Ahora muchos de los miembros de NBFC viven en otro lugares como Londres, Barcelona, Santiago, Los Angeles, Hawai, y por eso usamos nuestro sitio para comunicar, compartir música, y organizar nuestras reuniones.

 - Has actuado en uno de los festivales más importantes

del planeta, cuéntanos como fue tu etapa en Detroit y tu paso por el DEMF.

Era un sueño a tocar en este festival, que todavía me siento afortunada de tocar allá.  El festival es una fecha muy importante a muchos amantes de Techno en EE.UU. y mas y mas del mundo. El sitio es increíble, en el centro de Detroit, al lado del rió.  Se puede oír una mezcla de todos los "masters" como Carl Craig, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Richie Hawtin, los nuevos héroes de Europa y muchos que no son tan conocidos en el resto del mundo pero son héroes en Detroit, como Punisher, Kero o este año para mi, Bruce Bailey. DEMF es un reunión de la comunidad de Techno en los EE.UU., siempre pierdo mi voz en el mitad del festival por tantas conversaciones, jeje.

 - Que tal te lo estás pasando en tu “Spring Tour”? Hace poco actuaste junto a Mathew Dear en el Smart Bar de Chicago. Cuéntanos!

Si, este año pasado era un desafió para mi en muchas maneras. Tuve que aprender como ser madre, pero no quería dejar de tocar y hacer música completamente.  Organicé algunos viajes a Estados Unidos, Canadá, y Chile para visitar a mi familia y amigos, y tocar. Es más fácil en estos lugares porque tengo familia y amigos, y gracias a ellos, pueden cuidar de mi hija. Hacer música es un desafió enorme todavía, tengo dos horas durante la siesta de mi hija y tengo suerte si puedo ducharme y escribir algunos emails, jeje. Pero ahora estoy mas acostumbrada al ritmo diario de madre, y me gustaría terminar algunos proyectos este año!

 - Háblanos de tus producciones, en el sello de Detroit, Hej Records. Estás actualmente trabajando en nuevas producciones?  

Bueno Hej Records es mi hogar. Michelle (Punisher) y Matt (John Overfiend) siempre me animaron a hacer música. Es un gran honor el trabajar en un mismo proyecto con personas como Maetrik y Bryan Zentz. Mi próximo proyecto con Hej es un remix para Olin, un artista nuevo de Chicago. Su música es increíble, muy eterno, como un nuevo Mathew Jonson, ¿quizás?

 - Puedes hablarnos de proyectos futuros y próximas actuaciones?  

Si, todo es mas lento con mi hija, pero estoy trabajando en un remix para el sello Slap Jaxx Music, mis trabajos originales que ojalá pueda completar y presentar como EP para Hej, y un proyecto que todavía no tiene nombre, pero estoy haciendo con un compañero de trabajo, otro asistente de vuelo.

Sassmouth is Sam Kern's aka, american DJ and producer who currently resides in London... resides in London in those small spaces of time which isn't touring the U.S., playing at Paris, Chile or even our area. Is now fully "Spring Tour" through cities such as San Francisco or Chicago and Detroit soon. Last April, he starred with Matthew Dear at the legendary Smart Bar in Chicago and will soon be in the openings with his friend and fellow Punisher, the 2011 DEMF (Detroit Electronic Music Festival) sharing with Akufen, Luke Hess, Arthur Oskan and Justin Long, among others.



From Multiplex have thought to give a short interview to tell us a little closer at how busy doing so.






Hi Sam, a pleasure to share with us your time and congratulations on your recent "treasure."

- For those who do not know you so can you tell us which are your roots and early influences of music on this?


 



Well, my roots and early influences are Punk and New Wave. As a child, lived in Washington state, near the Seattle scene in the 80 and 90. Bands like Nirvana, Jane's Addiction, Fugazi, Sleater-Kinney, and The Pixies were my favorite. Therefore, more experimental things, and industrial, as Aphex Twin, Nine Inch Nails and Front 242 interested me a lot during this time. My sister had a super influential music collection, music from Hip Hop as Digital Underground and JJ Fad and Pop England as Depeche Mode and The Cure. At the same time, he played viola in an orchestra and a group of Punk Rock. I guess I loved you all! And now, I'm always looking for a variety of electronic music, nice things and dark things, hard things and more things Funk. But always low.





- You are a person who travel a lot and lived in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Santiago, Chile, Detroit and now in London. Tell us about your learning, musical evolution, things that have been important in your professional development, etc.




When I moved to New York, then to Chicago, I found the world of House and Techno in places like Twilo, Tunnel in New York, and Smart Bar in Chicago. After the first minute in, and was addicted to music, the wave very "underground" in these places, people dancing side by side, but not in a sexist way. I needed to find out all about the music, artists, labels, history. He spent much time asking local friends about the music and sometimes deejays such as "what is this?" and long in the stores of vinyl, listening, listening. Also traveling to Detroit many times, for the holidays and learn their history. First time in Detroit was pretty heavy, I immediately felt the great heart of the city, because it always is reflected in his music. The work was, people went, but music and art and soul of the city remain. It is a very impressive, I think every music lover should make a trip to Detroit in your life.
 




- Tell us about Naughty Bad Fun Collective.


Just NBFC first was a group of friends in Chicago who liked the culture of "after party". They organized "after-parties" anywhere they could find, a nightclub, a bar, a house, a park, a forest. Probably the most famous was our basement called the "Rave Dungeon". Adam Beyer, Paco Osuna, and Seth Troxler, and many friends of the "Midwest" back in the U.S. played several festivals. The basement had a magic wave, was covered with ancient graffiti, tubes that people banging when the music was very good... Now many of the NBFC members living in other places like London, Barcelona, Santiago, Los Angeles, Hawai, and why we use our site to communicate, share music, and organize our meetings.
 




- You have acted in one of the most important festivals
the planet, tell us how was your stage in Detroit and your passage through the DEMF.





It was a dream to play in this festival, I still feel lucky to play there. The festival is a very important date to many U.S. Techno lovers and more and more of the world. The site is amazing, downtown Detroit, adjacent to the River. You can hear a mixture of all the "masters" like Carl Craig, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Richie Hawtin, the new heroes of Europe and many who are not as well known in the world but are heroes in Detroit, like Punisher, Kero or this year for me, Bruce Bailey. DEMF is a community meeting to Techno in the U.S., I always lose my voice in the middle of the festival for many conversations, hehe.






 - How about you're having your "Spring Tour"? Recently you acted with Mathew Dear Smart Bar in Chicago. Tell us!



Yes, this past year was a challenge for me in many ways. I had to learn how to be a mother, but did not want to stop playing and making music altogether. I organized a few trips to the United States, Canada and Chile to visit my family and friends, and play. It is easier in these places because I have family and friends, and thanks to them, they can take care of my daughter. Making music is a huge challenge yet, I have two hours for a nap with my daughter and I have lucky if I can shower and write some emails, hehe. But now I'm more accustomed to the daily rhythm of mother, and I would like to finish some projects this year!





- Tell us about your productions with the Detroit label, Hej Records. You are currently working on new productions?




Well Hej Records is my home. Michelle (Punisher) and Matt (John Overfiend) always encouraged me to make music. It's a great honor to work on a project with people like Bryan Zentz and Maetrik. My next project is a remix Hej Olin, a new artist from Chicago. His music is amazing, very timeless, as a new Mathew Jonson, perhaps?

 




 - You tell us about future projects and upcoming performances?


Yes, everything is slower with my daughter, but I'm working on a remix for the label Slap Jaxx Music, hopefully my original work can be completed and submitted as an EP for Hej, and a project that has no name yet, but I'm doing with a coworker, another flight attendant.
