HERON

Siempre digo que las cosas que te cambian la vida hay que tenerlas muy presentes, para bien o para mal siempre hay un pequeño detalle que puede hacer que elijas un camino u otro, y digo esto porque Heron demuestra que le debe mucho a una etapa de su vida en la que coexistía su influencia musical con su amor por la naturaleza.
Este artista alemán lleva 3 años con una trayectoria imparable, su segundo trabajo fue editado en el sello alemán Minisome, una referencia con 3 cortes que catapultó al éxito el propio Richie Hawtin, utilizando los 3 cortes en la apertura de temporada de Time Warp.
Pocos meses después ya contaba con su propio sello, Limikola, donde encontramos grandes trabajos con artistas como Someone Else, Dj Emerson, Hans Bouffmyhre o Bryan Zentz.

- Hola Martin, ¿cuál es el motivo de tu particular nombre artístico y el nombre de tu sello?

Hola y muchas gracias por solicitarme esta entrevista, ¡es un placer!

Bueno, cuando yo era niño mi abuelo y mis padres tuvieron una gran influencia sobre mí y mi vida en todo aquello centrado en la naturaleza.
A mí me encantaba la mineralogía, los animales, los árboles, las plantas y toda la naturaleza en general, así que después de terminar la escuela fui a una isla en el Mar del Norte para trabajar como guarda en el parque nacional. Este trabajo se basó en la observación de aves y cartografía , en su mayoría las aves zancudas.
Así que cuando empecé a producir, a finales de 2007, decidí que mi nombre de artista fuera “Heron”, es la expresión en inglés para un pájaro de piernas largas que la mayoría de la gente conoce, la garza.
En cuanto al nombre del sello, Limikola, también está relacionado con las aves zancudas, las limícolas que yo observaba en esta isla llamada Norderney.

Es la combinación de las dos pasiones de mi vida, la música y la naturaleza.

- Tu primer gran trabajo fue editado en Supdub Digitales y tuvo una gran acogida por el público, ¿te esperabas este éxito?

Este trabajo del que hablas es – Welcome to the Club Adventure – que fue mi tercer lanzamiento.
Para mí, el éxito de mi segundo EP “Retro”, fue más sorprendente porque Richie Hawtin lo pinchó y lo utilizó para el histórico podcast RA100 de Resident Advisor y también para un podcast de Ibiza Voice.
Esto es algo que no me hubiera esperado nunca, me sorprendió y al mismo tiempo me hizo muy feliz.
Y en cuanto al EP de Supdub:
Definitivamente me sentí superfeliz del éxito, la cara A se metió en las listas de Beatport a lo largo de semanas y alcanzó el top 12, fue realmente increíble.

- Decides muy pronto crear tu propio sello, ¿cuál es la historia de Limikola?

Limikola empezó como una plataforma para mis propios proyectos y creaciones, como puedes ver, las dos primeras referencias son mías. Pero tenía algunas demos realmente buenas y decidí crear un pequeño grupo de artistas similares a mi música y a mi sonido.
Ahora mismo es una plataforma de artistas más jóvenes como yo, artistas con ideas diferentes a Limikola cuando fue fundado a finales del 2008.

- ¿Hay previsto algún nuevo lanzamiento en Limikola?

Sí, por supuesto.
Apenas hace dos semanas salió a la venta el nuevo EP “Ensampled” de Nebes (él es de Belgrado, Serbia), la fecha del lanzamiento en digital es el 7 de marzo.
Éste ya tiene un enorme apoyo de Troy Pierce.

Los siguientes lanzamientos son dos referencias de remezclas increíble:
LIMI014 - en esta referencia se remezcla el tema Bedroom Eyes de Someone Else con un remix de Alland Byallo de San francisco, un remix de NiceTry (residente en las fiestas que hago junto con otro amigo en Münster) y otro a cargo mío.
LIMI015 - En este se remezcla Rufus, que fue mi último EP con Limikola, y las remezclas están a cargo de Troy Pierce & Heartthrob aka Square One, Miro Pajic y Nebes.

Después de la referencia 015, hay un montón de grabaciones en espera para ser editadas de artistas como: Moevalith de Canadá, IR de Berlín, Miss Sunshine de Croacia, Octave de Francia, Conde Cero de España, también re-ediciones de algunos temas de la época digital del sello (que acaba de iniciar lanzamientos en vinilo en los dos últimos EPs) con algunas buenas remezclas.

- Has trabajado en otros sellos como Supdub Digitales, Synewave o Sleaze Records, ¿ha habido algún contacto con Minus?

Sí.
Empecé a estar en contacto con Jesse (Heartthrob) a principios de 2006. Fue esta la razón por la que Richie tenía mi segundo EP y lo pinchó a lo largo de meses. Desde ese momento Rich y yo estamos en contacto, pero también con Troy, y por supuesto con Jesse.
Realmente respeto su trabajo, continúan haciendo un gran trabajo después de tantos años y me da apoyo para el mío y mi sello, y además toda su música es superbuena, a mi me gusta.

- Recientemente has realizado un tour por toda América, ¿lo haces como artista o representando a algún sello?

El tour que hice el verano pasado lo hice con mi nombre, Heron.
Empecé a organizarlo durante el invierno y conseguí buenas actuaciones en Miami, Puerto Rico, Chicago y El Paso.
La actuación en The Electric Pickle en Miami fue increíble, uno de los mejores clubs donde he pinchado.

- Has viajado mucho, pero creo que no has actuado nunca en España, ¿hay alguna posibilidad de verte por aquí?

Sí, eso es muy raro, nunca tuve ninguna petición para actuar en España.
Me encantaría pinchar allí, me encanta el país, el paisaje, la naturaleza y sobre todo la cultura.
Tal vez haya alguna posibilidad este año, sería genial.

- ¿En qué sala o festival te gustaría actuar?

DEMF (Detroit Electronic Music Festival), ¡por supuesto!. Detroit siempre ha tenido mucha influencia en mi carrera musical y en segundo lugar es algo histórico.
Además de DEMF, me encantaría pinchar en Berghain, Panorama Bar, Womb (Tokyo), Sonar, Fuse (Bruselas) y Exit Festival en Serbia.

- Hi Martin, What is the reason for your stage name and the name of your label?

Hello and thanks a lot for the interview request – pleasure!

Well, when I was a child my grandfather and my parents had a huge influence on me and my life – everything was nature focused.
I was totally into mineralogy, animals, trees, plants – everything.
After I finished school I went to an island in the North Sea to work as a ranger in the national park.
This work was based on watching and mapping birds – mostly wading birds.
So I decided in late 2007 when I started producing tracks to get that artist name “Heron”. It's the english expression for a long legged bird most of the people know (esp.: la garza).
As for the label – Limikola – it's because of the wading birds, the limicols I was watching and mapping on this island called Norderney.

It's a combination of two passions of my life – nature and music.

- Your first great work was published in Digital Supdub and had a great reception by the public, do you expect this success?

This EP you're talking about – Welcome To The Adventure Club – was my third release.
To me, the success of my second EP “Retro” was more surprising because Richie Hawtin played it out, used it for the historical RA100 podcast and also for an Ibiza Voice podcast.
This is something I never expected – I was shocked and happy at the same time, this feeling was out of this world.
And as for the EP on Supdub:
Definitely I was superhappy about the success, the a-side got into the Beatport charts over weeks and reached position 12, that was really amazing.

- Soon decide to create your own label, what is the story of Limikola?

Limikola started as a platform for my own creations and projects. As you can see, the first two releases are by myself.
But then I got some really great demos and I decided to built up a small pool of artists they are similar to my sound and music.
Right now it's a platform for younger artists like me, artists with ideas they fit on my main idea I had on Limikola when I founded it in late 2008.

- Is there a new release planned in Limikola?

Yes, of course.
Just two weeks ago Nebes' (he is from Belgrade, Serbia) new EP “Ensampled” came out, the digital releasedate is 7th March.
This one already got huge support from Troy Pierce.

The next catalogue numbers are two huge remix releases:
LIMI014 is going to be the Bedroom Eyes Remixes (Someone Else) with a remix by Alland Byallo from San Francisco, a remix by NiceTry (he is a resident at the partys i'm doing with him and another friend in Münster) and a rework by myself.
LIMI015 is going to be the Rufus Remixes (Rufus was my latest EP on Limikola). Remixers are Troy Pierce & Heartthrob aka Square One, Miro Pajic and Nebes.

After 015 there are lots of records in the line – Moevalith from Canada, IR from Berlin, Miss Sunshine from Croatia, Octave from France, Conde Cero from Spain, but also re-releases of some tracks from the digital period of the label (we just started releasing vinyl two EPs ago) with some nice remixers.

- You've worked on other labels as Supdub Digital Synewave or Sleaze Records, has there been any contact with Minus?

Yes.
I started being in touch with Jesse (Heartthrob) in early 2006.
He was the reason that Richie got my second EP he played out over months. Since that time Rich and me are in touch, but also with Troy and of course Jesse.
I really respect their work, they're still doing a great job after so many years, giving me support on my own work and my label – and besides all the music: they're supernice people I really like!

- You recently made a tour across America, would you do as an artist or representing a label?

The tour I did last summer was under my alias Heron.
I started organizing this one during the winter, got some supernice gigs in Miami, Puerto Rico, Chicago and El Paso.
Especially the show at The Electric Pickle in Miami was totally amazing.
One of the best clubs I ever played.

- You've traveled a lot, but I have not ever played in Spain, is there any chance to see you here?

Yes, that's really strange – I never got any requests from Spain.
I would love to play there, I love the country, the landscape, the nature and especially the culture.
Maybe there will be a possibility this year, would be great.

- What club or festival you would like to act?

DEMF – definitely! Detroit always had the biggest influence on my music carreer and secondly it's something historical.
Besides DEMF I'd love to play at Berghain, Panorama Bar, Womb (Tokyo), Sonar, Fuse (Brussels) and Exit Festival in Serbia.
